Amtrak meets major PTC milestone

By Tanya Snyder 08/13/2020 02:30 PM EDT

Amtrak has completed positive train control implementation on all the tracks it owns or controls, the railroad announced Thursday.

What that means: PTC equipment is now installed and operable on all 550 Amtrak-owned locomotives, all 160 radio towers and all 898 route miles, and all required employees have completed training.

The final piece was the installation of PTC technology on about one mile of slow-speed track in the Chicago terminal.

How PTC is going for everyone else: FRA announced Wednesday that PTC is in operation or advanced field testing on 99 percent of the route miles mandated by law and that just two commuter railroads remain at risk for missing the deadline.

What’s next: Amtrak said it will continue to work with its partners to advance PTC implementation on host infrastructure and to ensure interoperability with tenant railroads. The federal statutory deadline for PTC implementation is Dec. 31, 2020.
